In the Gators' season opener against the nation’s top-ranked Newman squad, Windston Legentus ‘26 became the fifth member of the exclusive 1,000 point club for Varsity Boys Basketball. This achievement marked the beginning of the final chapter in Legentus’ journey as a Gator, one fueled by constant improvement and continued support by teammates and coaches.

Legentus joined the Gators as a freshman after being recruited by Head Coach Tom Nelson.

“Tom Nelson reeling me in as a young kid, just taking me under his wing along with his wife, Sandy Nelson, just showed me nothing but love,” said Legentus.

This positive environment helped Legentus make an immediate impact on the team, often starting alongside seasoned veterans while playing against some of the nation’s best players. By the end of his freshman season, Legentus had racked up 288 points total. His success led him to pick up his first few division one offers from colleges as soon as the season ended.

Now, as a senior closing in on deciding his next steps, Legentus holds a total of six division one offers, as well as interest from many top college programs.

Legentus credits his success to a constant desire to improve, great support from his coaches, and an evolution in his leadership ability. In particular, support from Coach Nelson has been a source of growth for Legentus.

“He's always been right there with me,” Legentus said. “Sometimes, I'm not going to lie, we butt heads a lot. Sometimes I think I'm right. Sometimes he thinks he's right. But at the end of the day, we always put whatever we have aside to come to the bigger goal, which is to win. He teaches me so much on and off the court. I'm just super thankful for everything that he's done for me and will continue to do for me in the future as well.

Legentus also emphasized how help from Nelson, former high-level players, and Brimmer alumni allowed him to mature significantly as a player throughout his years.

“I think first coming to Brimmer, I was primarily just focused on trying to just hit shots and putting the ball in the hoop,” Legentus said. “But over time, Tom [Nelson] alongside people that graduated like Ta’Quan [Williams ‘23], Andre Mills [‘24], even alumni like AJ Reeves [‘18], Kyrell Luc [‘21], a lot of people in my corner just taught me there's so much more to the game of basketball—mixing it up, getting people involved, being a leader, [having] high character.

Now, as a captain, Legentus takes on his biggest role yet—applying what he learned from his mentors to leading his team. Despite the challenges that come with leadership, he feels honored and ready for it.

“[Being a leader is] a tough task to endure because it's a lot of different personalities, a lot of different voices that go into the team,” Legentus said. “But it's something that I know that I can handle. And I've been able to do that for these past few years. And I wouldn't ask for any less of a role.”

Looking ahead, Legentus sees a bright season ahead for the team. With both new and returning talent, the Gators look poised to challenge for a NEPSAC AA championship.

“I'm really excited because I think this year will be the year that we finally bring home a double-A [NEPSAC] championship,” Legentus said. “We were really close my sophomore year, getting to the championship but losing when we got there. But I think with this team, we have a lot of great skill sets, personalities, [and] people on this team… So I think we have a great, hardworking squad and we'll get it done.”

Leading into his last ride as a Gator, Legentus’ 1000 point accomplishment stands as a testament to the journey that brought him to his current success.

“[Hitting 1000 points] was a great feeling,” Legentus said. “It was a lot of years of hard work, dedication, just trusting Tom Nelson's path for me and my journey. But being able to accomplish a great feat like that, I think I'm the fifth kid that he had to do that, along with some other big names—it's good company to be with. So I'm definitely happy to have that.”

The 2-1 Gators play away at fellow class AA opponents Worcester Academy today, December 3, at 5:30 p.m.
