After playing on the Varsity I team for two years, Mills’s prowess on the basketball court quickly became legendary. Earlier this season, he not only shattered the School’s single-game scoring record with a remarkable 52-point performance against Massanutten Military Academy, but also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark shortly after.

Reflecting on these milestones, Mills revealed a mix of humility and pride.

“It means a lot to me, especially coming here, this is only my second year at Brimmer, so doing it in two years goes to show how much work I put into it,” Mills said.

However, Mills’s ascent to these heights was not devoid of obstacles. His sophomore year at Vermont Academy was particularly challenging, marked by a sense of isolation and mistrust that tested his mental fortitude.

“I struggled with understanding people's intentions, and I didn’t know if people were really there for me,” Mills said. “It’s hard to give your trust into somebody that you really don’t know.

Despite the hurdles, Mills adapted and persevered.

“The adjustment took a long time, but I definitely got adjusted to it,” Mills said, highlighting his journey of acclimatization and maturity.

Central to Mills’s narrative is the influential role of his coach and mentor, Tom Nelson. His wisdom, support, and understanding has been crucial to Mills’s evolution.

“A lot of things impressed me about Andre as a basketball player,” Nelson said. “One is his determination, his motor, his relentlessness, and just the ability to continue to play as hard as he possibly can.”

Under Nelson’s tutelage, Mills embarked on a transformative journey, focusing on the fundamentals and mastering the mental aspects of the game.

“I think it improved with me going back to the basics, you know, just coming to Brimmer, working out at Brimmer with Tom, just working on my game, focusing on my game, controlling what I can control, that helps” Mills said, underscoring the significance of discipline and focus in his personal and athletic growth.

Mills’s impact extends beyond his personal achievements, resonating deeply with his peers. His teammates, including Cam Thornton ’27 and Ladanion Payne ’27, recognize him as a paragon of leadership and inspiration.

Thornton shared his admiration for Mills’s ability to positively influence the team.

“You try to bring you down. He tries to bring you up,” Thornton said.

Payne echoed these sentiments, highlighting the profound effect Mills has on the team’s dynamics.

“It's for the most part I'd say it's fun,” Payne said. “It’s also very intense because [Mills] wants to win as well.”

Mills’s quest for greatness is not just a story of athletic prowess but also one of personal metamorphosis. Nelson observed the holistic emergence of Mills, evolving into a mature and well-rounded individual.

“Off the court, I watched a young man become a man,” Nelson said. “He’s growing up. He’s maturing.”

As Mills's star continued to soar, his talent and potential garnered attention from top-tier college programs. Prestigious institutions, including Providence College, University of Iowa, and UMass Amherst, extended offers.

However, it was the consistent support and unwavering loyalty of Texas A&M that ultimately resonated with Mills, leading to his commitment to the Aggies.

“The loyalty and the support of the fans,” Mills said, emphasizing the role of a strong support system in his development. “Not a lot of people in my journey and not a lot of coaches in my journey really stuck with me. Even when I had that one off-year basketball wise and Texas A&M always stuck with me. Texas A&M fans are very diehard."

Throughout his career, Mills has been underestimated by coaches and scouts. After a rough year, Mills embodies the endurance needed at the professional level.

Future Varsity I players should take note from Mills’s playbook—it’s the finish that counts.
